What is the Nemesis system in Shadow of Mordor?
The game can track any Uruk (a nastier orc, the general antagonists of the game) that the player comes into contact with. While there are "generic" Uruk for the player to fight en masse, and will be as cannon fodder as part of Sauron's armies, the game will begin tracking Uruk that perform any notable talents within the game, such as killing the player, or surviving an encounter with the player. These Uruk will be promoted into captains. Defeating these leaders will help to weaken Sauron's army, and these leaders will drop a rune which the player can install on Talion's weapons to provide additional buffs in battle. Alternatively, being killed by a leader will cause the current mission to be cancelled and the player returned to a safe point to continue exploring, and the leader will gain additional power, making him more difficult to defeat in the next encounter. If the procedurally generated Orcs survive an encounter with Talion, they will also be promoted. Further, such deaths are tracked through online servers, and the player's friends on the various network services will be notified of this death and be offered the chance to accept a Vendetta mission, and exact revenge on the Uruk. If the mission is successful the game will give rewards to both the original player and the victorious friend.

Is Shadow of Mordor based on the Hobbit?
Unlike most video games adaptations of The Lord of the Rings universe, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is adapted from Tolkien's novels, rather than the movie franchise. The game takes place in the 60-year gap between the events of Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The family of Talion (voiced and motion captured by Troy Baker ), a ranger of Gondor responsible for guarding the Black Gate of Mordor, is killed by the armies of Sauron, but Talion is revived with "wraith-like abilities" and heads into Mordor to exact his revenge. Mordor is not yet a barren wasteland in this story. The player will encounter Gollum (voiced by Liam O'Brien ). Talion discovers that the wraith who revived him is Celebrimbor (voiced by Alastair Duncan ), the greatest Elven smith master of the Second Age, who also seeks revenge against Sauron.

Who did the Balrog fall to in Shadow of War?
The appearance of the Balrog may have truly confused many players in Shadow of War. The Balrog fought and fell to Gandalf in the Mines of Moria, so what is one doing in Mordor fighting Talion?

Morgoth himself was of the Ainur race, an ancient and powerful race created by the godhead of Arda, a being known as Eru Iluvatar.
Why can't the Middle-Earth games go into the Silmarillion?

Who forged the rings of power?
Prior to those entries, one would have been forgiven for assuming that Sauron forged the Rings of Power, but it was actually the Elf, Celebrimbor, who crafted the rings that Sauron would use to take power. Naturally, Sauron also betrayed Celebrimbor. The Middle-Earth games obviously take liberties with Celebrimbor's story, but he is a character that appeared in The Silmarillion.
When does Shadow of Mordor begin?
This occurs in the year 2942 of the Third Age, so we can assume that, the developers having no reason to deviate from this date, Shadow of Mordor begins in 2942 . But, seeing as Sméagol doesn't leave the Misty Mountains to search for Bilbo until 2944 and doesn't even reach Mordor until 2980, it's a really unclear how the game's timeline accounts for this. For simplicity's sake, let's just assume that the game is true to this part of the timeline and Talion doesn't return from death for 38 years. This would explain why Udûn is already fully populated with orc settlements by the time Talion and Celebrimbor begin their quest and meet Gollum. It's also around this time that Sméagol becomes acquainted with Shelob. As for Shadow of War, we really don't get much hint as to when this may be, other than that it's before or around 3017, because that's the year Sméagol leaves Mordor. For context, the War of the Ring in which the One Ring is destroyed by Frodo, Sam, and Sméagol, lasts from 3018 to 3019, and it ends with the destruction of the Ring and Sauron. * Edit: the epilogue to Shadow of War probably starts around or before TA 2999, because Shelob narrates at the game's true ending that "Talion held back the forces of darkness for decades," i.e., at least twenty years. So, all told, Talion's time in Mordor (including his time as a Ringwraith, and the 38 years that apparently pass between his death and his meeting Gollum in Udûn) lasts, at the most, 77 years. Talion, of course, doesn't appear to age, the reason being that he's dead already. Note that one major problem with the story of Shadow of War in terms of the timeline is that the game's initial conflict revolves around the siege and fall of Minas Ithil and the capture of the Palantír held there, but these events actually happened 942 years prior, in TA 2002.
Why was Celebrimbor trapped in Mordor?
The game suggests that Celebrimbor was forced by Sauron to work on the One Ring, to perfect it, for an undetermined amount of time. He then took the Ring and waged a war of uncertain duration, and after his defeat and murder at the hands of Sauron, he was trapped in Mordor as a wraith for, as the game explains, so long that he forgot who he was.
How many deaths does Talion have?
There are at least three canon deaths of Talion. His death at the start of Mordor, his first time meeting Eltariel, and at the end of Blade of Galadriel. Six weeks accounted for, at least. If there is an expected/number of deaths that was posted by the creators somewhere, use that for calculating.
