1. Collecting scrap

First things first: in order to build anything in Fallout 76, you’ll need scrap – and lots of it. You can collect scrap by picking up an item in the world and breaking it down into its raw materials at a workbench, buying it in bulk from vendors like the one in Flatwoods, or farming it from workstations.

2. Location, location

There are lots of things to consider when choosing where to build your base. You’ll want an area that is relatively open to give you enough room to place down foundations. It should also be pretty remote to avoid clashing with other bases upon entering into a new server.

3. Build upwards, not outwards

At some point, you might decide you want to relocate your base, so make sure you’re ready to move.

4. Make a farm

Once you’ve got your base sorted, you will want to start looking into constructing a farm to keep you well stocked with ingredients to stave off hunger. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy; just go to any farm in the world, harvest some crops, and replant them in the area surrounding your base using the C.A.M.P menu.

5. Building defences

Every now and then, your base will come under attack from wandering enemies and online players. So it is important for you to build traps and turrets to keep them at bay.

6. Rigging up electricity

Another skill you should familiarise yourself with early on is how to set up a simple power grid. This will keep your base illuminated and also power devices that can harvest raw materials.

7. Keep within the budget

Focus on building a base that is practical, rather than buying BBQs...

Characteristics

Public workshops function similarly to the C.A.M.P. building system. In order to build at a public workshop, a Claim Workshop event quest must be completed, requiring the player to clear enemies before claiming the workshop. A sum of 20-100+ caps must also be invested depending on how many non-default structures are present in the workshop.

Resources

Each public workshop comes with a number of site materials for building that can only be used within the claimed workshop. While in build mode, the workshop materials are displayed in green, while the player's resources are displayed in white.

Finished product factories

The factories that are available for use at power plant or factory workshops cannot be constructed or moved by the player character.

Notes

Claiming a workshop for the first time with a player automatically unlocks the crafting plans for the various resource extractors that can be built at workshops or C.A.M.P.s if one is deployed next to a resource deposit. They will earn the player 10 Atoms .

Behind the scenes

Prior to patch 1.1.0.8, unlocking default containers or doors (not manually built and locked by a player) at a workshop owned by another player would incur a bounty.

Bugs

PC Xbox One Playstation 4 Unlocking the safe on the upper floor of Billings homestead while it is owned by another player will incur a bounty. Unlike picking a lock at a C.A.M.P., there is no warning. [verification needed]
