Well you can sell your excess stuff to them, I've never noticed an increase in income. But in my case at least, by the time I could build them I wasn't short of money, just traders to sell to.

It's just convienent, it isn't game breaking or outrageous. If you have the settlement skills to make traders, make them. if you don't, just sell to the dozens of venders already in the game.
