After Concord the settlers will ask you to help them out when they decide to squat in your old neighborhood, but it's up to you if you want to help. You can just keep your stuff in the Red Rocket station and never go back to Sanctuary if you like. On the other hand, a lot of the Minuteman quests from Preston are all about helping out people and setting up new settlements, so you're giving up a bunch of quests not doing those.
