The 3.0 EcoDiesel uses a traditional timing chain for valve timing. The timing chain is driven by the crankshaft and wraps around camshaft sprockets. It controls the camshaft timing so that the intake and exhaust valves open and close at the proper time. If the timing chain slips or jumps the teeth, the timing of the valves opening and closing gets out of sync.
