What was the first South End settlement?

The South End House would be the first of its kind "in Boston and the fourth one in the United States." Before the incorporation of the final five organizations into USES, the Federation of South End Settlements was formed in 1950. The Federation of South End Settlements was made up of the South End House, Lincoln House (1892), Hale House (1895), Harriet Tubman House (1904), Ellis Memorial House, and Eldridge House. This federation was founded in order to create a larger pool of funds for the organizations to share. Eventually the Ellis Memorial and Eldridge Houses would disassociate themselves in 1959, and the four remaining houses and the Children's Art Centre would unite to become the United South End Settlements in January 1960.

Very grateful to have been hired at USES, my schedule and benefits are consistent and it's extremely rewarding to work with the children every day. Although it can be tiring just like any job, my management recognizes stress and works as a team to make things better.

This summer I worked as a camp counselor at an overnight camp. We are with campers 24 hours a day, that includes sleeping in cabins with them, waking up and going to meals throughout the days. Also going on trips such as hiking, zoo's, museums, and many more.

Disappointing

When my aunt told me about USES I interviewed and got the job on spot and loved to first 4 months but once the new director came in January the ENTIRE environment changed. She was firing people just to hire her old co workers. I was the 7th employee who either got fired or quit in a 2 month span.

It seem like none of the teachers are happy to be there

I loved this place when I first started all the way up until January 2019. They hired a new director and things started to go down hill from there. She was not a good fit for the program, and she definitely doesn’t demonstrate the mission statement that they claim to go by.

Programs

• After School Program
52 children, aged 5–12 years, are accepted into the USES After School Program. The program's mission is to "support school success and promote the social, cognitive, and emotional development of the students." This program runs the full year while school is in session, and during summer and vacation days.

The history of USES began in 1891 when William J. Tucker founded what was to become known as the South End House at 6 Rollins Street. Individuals interested in volunteering with the organization must submit an application (available online). All volunteers and interns are given the opportunity to list their preferred programs and hours of availability.

Donating to USES is possible online. Donors that give at least one-thousand dollars annually are named members of the Harriet Tubman Society and their names can be featured on the USES website.
