When to jump to the next section in Kenshi?
For instance, at various points in the roadmap (or as early as character selection), you may need to know specifics about the different races in Kenshi that aren’t covered until Section 8 and 9, so jump to those sections. When the roadmap tells you to focus on building up farm production, consult Section 5.
How many races are there in Kenshi?
There are four primary “races” in Kenshi, with various sub-races.
What are the challenges of different biomes?
Different biomes will contain different challenges. Alongside different environmental makeup, they contain different relations to the factions and different wildlife – many of whom are extremely dangerous.
What is the first part of the Kenshi guide?
The first part of this guide provides an updated Roadmap and Beginner Guide for new players focused on base-building. The second part provides in-depth sections for all players on specific topics in Kenshi, including Race/Role Rankings, Farming, Autohauling, and more. There are a lot of good guides out there for achieving particular goals, but few, if any, focus on base-building first, and warrior development second. This guide attempts to show you how to do that.
What section of Kenshi is combat?
For more on this, look at Sections 8 and 9, which break down the various races in Kenshi, their combat roles and non-combat roles.
How many people do you need to start a Squin bar?
If there’s a free recruit in a bar in Squin, you’ll want to scoop them up immediately. You’d like to start with at least 3 people.
Why are Shek warriors so good?
a Shek warrior due to combat bonuses. They have a horrible hunger rate, which is painful early, and a ton of job limitations, which can also be painful. But they are good at fighting. Note that they get targeted by the Holy Nation so that might limit you for early recruiting and trade in the central northern portion of the map.
Where is Squin base start?
Squin Base Start – In this sample playthrough, our first step is to find Squin (shown in the map below). It’s in a good central location south of the Hub with a ton of dried meat from its two bars and an adjacent copper source.
How to protect miners from beak creatures?
Expanding your walled sections is the next priority, particularly in the north by the Vain Biome to protect your miners from the Beak creatures that roam there. You probably will not have researched large defensive walls yet, but you can always tear them down and put up new ones later on. You want two main entrances to your base that have funneled kill-zones (explained in Sec. 3, Killzones, below).
How rare are 3k recruits?
3k recruits should always be picked up (and obviously freebies) because in most playthroughs they are relatively rare in the early going for this area – most recruits are 6k – and the amount you save on these guys makes an impact.
What happens if you build in Holy Nation?
The downside of building in Holy Nation territory, is that if you have any character that isn't a Greenlander man, you can expect some degree of discrimination at the hands of the Holy Nation populace. Women and Scorchlanders tend to be treated rather condescendingly and have less persuasive power, but non-humans are in for a bad time. If a Paladin spots a non-human outside of your base, un-escorted by a Greenlander, they will be attacked on sight. If a Paladin spots non-humans in your outpost, they will request that you surrender these party members to the service of Okran. You may avoid this by giving your humans (particularly every Greenlander man) a copy of The Holy Flame. You may then assure the inquisitive Paladin that these non-human "beasts" are slaves to glorious Okran. They will then leave you alone. Skeletons will always be killed on sight, keep them out of the Holy Nation.
Where to pick armorsmithing leather?
If players are planning on Armour Smithing with Leather, they should pick a location near animals like Beak Things and Gorillos .

Early Money-Making Strategies
Settlement Location
- Finding a place for your first settlement is a big part of the adventure in Kenshi, and I don’t want to provide spoilers. For the basics on prospecting and scouting, I’d refer you to Stormbrooke’s guide on finding the perfect base– he’s a long time player who has educated the community a lot on different base locations and ideas. 1. Note – Use your...
Base Layout
- Base Layout Concepts There are a lot of things that you’re going to be trying to juggle when laying out your base. First, I’ll show you two examples posted by Fusiara on Reddit that I liked in particular, and then I will go into some strategies and ideas for building a base yourself. These bases are compact, they have good killzones, and have food capacity for what looks like a smalli…
Killzones
- Building Your Killzones – Strategies and Walkthrough 1. You want a killzone setup at each base entrance – which is why you really want no more than 2 base entrances, even if it makes travel times slightly longer. 2. Unless you know in advance that you want to communicate with a raid group (like tax collectors), make sure you set your AI options to “shoot first ask questions later” t…
Farming and Food
- Farming For a group of well-trained warriors defending a small settlement, farming may be pretty straightforward – but if you followed this guide and were focused on rapid faction expansion, farming can be very difficult to get sustainable. Its labor-intensive, space-intensive, and time-intensive (in terms of the steps your farmers and cooks take to get you a final product). It was s…
Autohauling
- Autohauling I’ve made this into a separate section because its extremely important – I will update this with any ideas and strategies that I come across. 1. Autohauling only collects a minimal number of resources at a time. For both building materials and farming (!), you will need to micromanage a bit to make it more efficient. Apparently, this was because the alternative (picki…
Faction Economy Strategies
- Faction Economy Strategies: This guide is primarily focused on faction expansion, so this section is probably the most important for developing faction economies. Preliminary Notes: 1. Consumer Traffic – towns will always have the highest numbers of consumers for your goods, so setting up stores in a town, and autohaul routes to it, are a good idea if you want to use the character vend…
Race Breakdowns
- There are four primary “races” in Kenshi, with various sub-races. (1) Humans Contain two subraces, and have the benefit of not being attacked on sight by the Holy Nation. (A) Greenlanders – Look like normal, you know, humans. 1. Can be recruited most everywhere, found with obvious frequency in the Holy Nation territory but are also plentiful in Waystations and Fishi…
Role Selection and Job Rankings
- Discussing Races and Patterns After considering the racial breakdown above, a few things begin to emerge: 1. Greenlanders – The jack of all trades, they have no penalties – meaning they can fill any combat or job role – can wear all armor and even if they don’t have a bonus they can still develop the skills just fine. 2. Scorchlanders – Job Roles: they don’t make good cooks, farmers, …
Arming and Equipping Your Squaddies
- General Notes: 1. Remember that characters only have one “attack slot,” meaning they can only be attacked by one person at a time. Its presently unclear to me if this is applies to ranged attacks, or whether they get a separate single attack slot. Will test this a bit and update. 2. Regardless, you need to keep this in mind, because it provides a significant bonus to player’s who can microman…
Introduction
Character Creation and Start Choice
- Character Creation and Start Choice I started as a lone wanderer, which is what this guide will focus on as it is the standard start. Your primary character will likely be your most complete. I chose a Male Greenlander, and if this is your first playthrough that makes a lot of sense. You won’t be hated by Holy Nation, which frees up much of the center-north portion of the map. However, t…
Basic Roadmap – Part 1: First Steps
- First Steps – Initial Training and Purchases RUN. Always. This is the only rule for beginning your life in Kenshi. While getting beat up isn’t the end of the world (or even a bad thing), there is plenty of time for that later. 1. Run speed is based on a character’s athletics skill. 2. Initially, you want to be running around to get your athletics u...
Basic Roadmap – Part 2: Before You Settle
- Okay, you’ve trained your starting character up a bit, recruited the freebie in Hub (if he was available), and are now ready to build an empire, or at least some metal objects in the desert so you can say you’ve left your mark on the world. Squin Base Start– In this sample playthrough, our first step is to find Squin (shown in the map below). It’s in a good central location south of the H…
Basic Roadmap – Part 3: Building The Settlement
- Starting Your Settlement – There are so many workable locations in the game, each with different pros and cons. See the Section 2, below, on settlement location for more but in this sample playthrough, we will be going to “Rainbow Valley” (discovered by Stormbrooke on steam). Background on this location: 1. Its located between three different Biomes, with great arid farmi…

- You can rely on mercs forever, but if you’d prefer not to, now is the time to start building up and training a “fighting group.” There are several ways you can do this – You can use a few trainin…
