Catan (previously called " Settlers of Catan ") is a classic boardgame designed by Klaus Teuber. It's probably the most successful of the Euro-style games, and has spawned numerous expansions. How to place settlements in chess?

Don't bother pointing it at that empty 5/9/10 intersection - someone will occupy it for sure. That 4/9 port? Perfect. Road placement is all about second-guessing your opponents: you basically want to point your road at the ( n +1) th best position left on the board where n = the number of settlement placements left. This is tough on round 1 of placements for obvious reasons, but gets easier as further placements are made and if you go first/last it should be a big part of your settlement placement strategy, too - your second placement should be in a decent spot that also allows you to point towards another decent spot AND hopefully inconveniences someone else.

Can settlements break up roads?

As others have stated, the first scenario is allowed, and in fact used as an example of how settlements can be used to break up roads in some editions of the manual. (This may be in the context of breaking the Longest Road, but possibly exactly in the scenario that you are asking about - building past opposing settlements.) Additionally, some editions of the C&K manual have a more detailed example about using a knight to block, and then having the knight displaced.

Can you expand past opposing settlements?

The second scenario is not allowed: you are not able to "expand past opposing settlements". Specifically, a road may only be placed next to an existing road if the intersection in between is either unoccupied, or occupied by a piece that is not able to block expansion. Friendly settlements and cities never block expansion, while opposing settlements and cities do. (Most opposing pieces in general do, but some in scenarios do not, or have their status unclear. For example, opposing wagons do not block road placement.)

You can do this in several different orders but I chose to work on the board itself first, and then trace the pieces after to insure my border fits perfectly. • Take a game piece from a Settlers of Catan board and trace it onto some scrap wood. I've attached an image showing the dimensions if you do not have the game.

Step 3: Tracing & Cutting the Border Out

In this step we will trace the pieces to find the exact border we need to fit our pieces.

Step 5: Spray Painting the Board & Pieces

In this step we are going to prime and paint the border and inside pieces. • I primed everything with a plasti-dip spray paint first. • Then spray the pieces their respective colors.

Step 6: Have Fun! Instructable on the Cards and Game Pieces Coming Soon!

I will be adding an Instructable on how to make the Cards and Game Pieces for Settlers of Catan. Stay Tuned.
