Was it the original creditor, or a collection agency that bought the debt? If it was a CA, that would be why, as collections on your report are considered public records for the CRAs, though I don't think you can actually find them in a public domain search.

To my knowledge, the settlement was not mandated by court. I just called the creditor and made a settlement (maybe not the best decision, but I just wanted to take care of it somehow).
