Well, according to the standard Contract for Sale of Land, which has a 42 day settlement period, if you’re going to enter into a contract to buy or sell property today (yes, that’s right 13 November 2013) your completion date will fall on Wednesday, 25 December 2013 – Christmas Day!

While local rules can vary in some degree, when one has 30 days, 90 days etc., one is going to count calendar days. If the last day falls on a weekend or a holiday, then there deadline is extended to the next day the court is open for business.

Your deadline could be 30, 60 or more days depending on what court you are appealing from (federal district, state limited or state unlimited, etc.) and other circumstances of your case, and it is critical that you know what deadline applies to your situation.

Every state has a statute that explains what a business day is. It is usually work days, excluding weekends and public holidays. As far as appeals, it is usually calendar day, not a business day. However, procedure rules may vary from court to court. Be sure to check with the court, or appellate entity, where you need to file your appeal.
