Can you get damaged if you fail to defend a settlement?

Yes. When you fail to defend a settlement defense and resource objects can get damaged and require repairs. Also, settlers can temporarily disappear. I failed to defend Nordhagen beach once when it had 14 settlers. Until I went there it showed I only had 2 settlers and a third of my installed defenses and no crops/water. Settlers repopulated once I started repairing crops/equipment. So, there is a penalty but it is quickly fixed with a minor investment of resources for repair.

I've had a few times where I got the failure notice without ever seeing the initial warning, I think it may just happen sometimes that the warning fails to show.
