Back where you met Siegward, take the lower lift to a Knight of The Boreal Valley , kill him for an Irithyll Straight Sword, open the door to the Road of Sacrifices, where a bonfire is located. The knight can be easily killed using the lift you took to get down. Before engaging the knight, send the lift back up, but do not ride it. Lure the knight through the two rooms back to the lift and position the hole between you and the knight. He should try to attack you and then fall to his death. The Irithyll Straight Sword will be automatically added to your inventory.

If you go back to the broken portion of this balcony, you can drop down to the roof below and then to the ground. On a wooden torture platform here you can find a Soul of an Unknown Traveler. Head through the archway from where the hollow came to find some mindless hollows sitting around in distress. Continuing forward you will come to a large stone staircase with a mallet wielding hollow, pitchfork hollow and some undead dogs. The large double doors at the top of the stairs cannot be opened from this side.

What to do in the lower section of the settlement?

If you go to the lower section of the settlement, prepare to deal with a couple Starved Hounds, an Evangelist and a few Peasant Hollows. Note the entrance underneath the stairs on your right. This leads to a sewer, a number of optional underground pathways and an alternate path to the Dilapidated Bridge bonfire.

How to deal with peasant hollows?

They aren't especially difficult due to their slowness. You just have to not get careless and let their numbers overwhelm you. This house also has a few Hollow Slaves who enjoy attacking from the dark. They tend to sneak up on your from behind or above. Due to their fast movements, they're best dealt with directly with melee attacks. This applies to their many other appearances in the game.

How to get the peasant hollows out of the building?

You can take each of them out systematically by approaching the group slowly. The Evangelists are best dealt with by dashing toward them, dealing a couple blows, and retreating before their melee attacks hit you. Repeat the process until they die. After you've cleaned up the area, Pick up the Estus Shard and the Ember nearby.

How to get a large soul of a deserted corpse?

Descend down the staircase from the bonfire, turn left and look for a corpse to pillage for a Large Soul of a Deserted Corpse. Head back toward the bonfire and take the staircase down, noting the large gate in the distance from which Starved Hounds emerge. Pass through the gate and veer right to the first bonfire within the settlement.

How to get Starved Hounds to pray?

Just beyond the overturned cart are two Starved Hounds feasting on a corpse. Kill them and collect two Alluring Skulls from that corpse. Continue through the archway, where you'll see dozens of motionless pilgrims praying.

Where to find Yoel of Londor?

Head toward the right wall, and you'll see and hear one pilgrim moving. Speak to him. This is Yoel of Londor. Accept his offer of service, and he'll disappear sell you magic at Firelink Shrine.

How to get Beckon Emote?

As you continue to the bridge, look among the deceased pilgrims, and listen for the voice of one who yet remains. He’s on the right side, and his name is Yoel of Londor, and he’s been waiting to die for what seems like awhile. Since that doesn’t seem to be happening anytime soon, he’ll offer to serve you instead, and like Greirat, go to Firelink Shrine and provide services like selling spells to you. Speaking with him will earn you the Beckon Emote. Note that if you talk to him back at the shrine, he'll offer to draw out your true strength - a slightly complicated matter that has some potential consequences that you can read about here. Before heading back, take a look around for one humanoid corpse among the pilgrims and grab 2 Homeward Bone.

How to get a Thrall to drop down?

As you head into the next building, a Thrall carrying a large sword way too big for him will drop down. He may look comical, but the weapon can deal a lot of damage, and cause you to bleed if you aren’t careful. Luckily, lugging around such a big weapon will give you plenty of openings to get behind him and stab him in the back. When he’s dead, open the large door (which only opens from this side), and immediately look up at the roof of the building you came out of to spy another Thrall lying in wait. If he doesn’t hop down to greet you, toss a knife his way to get him down, and finish him off, and grab the Caduceus Round Shield from a corpse nearby. Wonder what he was doing up there?

How to get Flynn's Ring?

Climb up onto the roof and search the scaffolding to find a body holding Flynn’s Ring. From up here, you can see one of the towers of the old cathedral where the boss is. You can actually drop down onto an overhang, and reach the tower from here. On the tower rampart, look around the back for a corpse with 2 Homeward Bone. Inside the tower, you’ll have to make a series of drops - you’ll have to sprint and jump to the scaffolding on the far side, or risk a falling death. At the bottom, collect the Chloranthy Ring and a full Mirrah Set, including a Mirrah Vest, Mirrah Gloves, and Mirrah Trousers. From here, you can safely drop down, putting you right in front of the boss's lair.

How to solve Soul of a Nameless Soldier?

To solve his predicament, step on the elevator but hop off before it goes down to get the upper elevator. The lower elevator will take you into the next area, but there’s more to do here. At the top of the elevator, step off and look around the corner for a Soul of a Nameless Soldier .

How to bridge the gap between the two paths?

If you want to bridge the gap between the two paths, consider entering the sewers to the right of the small bridge. This will lead down a ladder into the sewers that contains a few small rats, a body holding a Caestus - and one very large rat hiding in the mist who will drop a Bloodbite Ring.

How to find Soul of an Unknown Traveler?

Before heading down, look for a side passage to the right clogged with debris and carefully walk out onto the cliff to find a Soul of an Unknown Traveler. Back in the alley, as soon as you move down, the Evangelist will see you coming, and immediately start flinging curses your way. They tend to come straight at you, so use the buildings on the side as cover while you bait up the Village Workers. There’s an open building on the right just as you start heading down that’s a good place to take cover.

Can you join the Covenant after defeating the boss?

Do note that after defeating the boss, you won't be able to join the covenant using this method, and will have to wait until much later in the game for another chance.

Description

A dilapidated township filled with crude buildings and rotting corpses. The Undead Settlement is a rather lengthy area filled with dangerous enemies. Although the resident Peasant Hollows are relatively easy to deal with, dispatching the Hollow Slaves will prove to be tricky, and the area introduces a new, dangerous enemy: the Evangelists .

Notes

The Undead Settlement is one of the largest areas in the game. A significant portion of the area is optional and can be bypassed to access the Road of Sacrifices, including the area's boss.

Trivia

The entrance to the Undead Settlement is stepped, which is interesting since wheeled carriages were supposed to pass through from Lothric before the High Wall appeared.
