How good are the defenders of the Great Plan?

The Defender's of the Great Plan receive a solid garrison for the settlements they control. They will be able to fight off most armies that aren't a full stack or of low quality troops. However, if the enemies are a full stack of mid tier quality and above, their settlements will fall.

How do you deal with defenders?

One should probably not care too much about the Defenders as they serve only to occupy settlements and provide temple buffs. Perform the rite that gives them a Blessed Spawning army so they can protect your income, but otherwise continue conquering and don't worry about doubling back to recapture a Defender's settlement.

Do you have to protect your cities from enemies?

You don't have to protect them at all. Enemy takes them, they have to invest into developing them again, they spend several turns recovering, then while they are stuck sieging and recovering you go through their lands and capture their settlements. Im playing as that slann lord, and they just have zero strength. So intentional i guess.

I like how they randomly declare war on me and since Nakai got ganked in turn 6 they have no armies and are so far away I can't even see them, so they have lots of money and I can then sue for peace and take like 7k gold which they always accept because no armies.

Once you get them a sizeable amount of land, not only will they handedly hold those territories, but they will remain easily within the top three strengths for the rest of the campaign, and they'll field armies comprised high end units when they have access to them. From my experience, the defenders of the great plan easily held off, and repelled Grimgor's 'ardboys who where the top strength faction of the game, and actively raised several of their settlements.

With this mod, the player gifts settlements and temples to the Defenders of the Great Plan faction just like he would in vanilla, but this makes it so that Defenders actually build buildings and field armies, making the faction a bit more able to defend itself and boosting Nakai's income because now the Defenders actually build income buildings and such, which indirectly means Nakai will end up earning more from vassal income.

The Defenders will never spend their money or recruit armies of its own. Every few turns, Nakai should be initiating diplomacy to Demand Payment from them to supplement the vassal's tribute. Nakai is obligated to declare war on any faction that attacks his vassal.
