How do you grow settlements in Fallout 4?

In order for your settlement to grow you need to make sure that existing settlers have everything they need. In a building menu, there are stats on the top of the screen. You don't need to maintain all of them but there are a few key ones: Beds, Food, Water, Defense.

15 Warwick Homestead

The Warwick Homestead is an abandoned waste treatment plant converted into a settlement. The main building is rather large and with some clever use of staircases and walkways it can make for an interesting and highly defensible location.

14 Kingsport Lighthouse

The Kingsport Lighthouse has a medium sized building area, but already comes with a lighthouse, home, dock, and a small area for farmland. It also has natural defenses in the way of the ocean and rock ledges, this forces attackers to come either by the dock or the driveway, easy points to defend without having to be there.

13 Finch Farm

The Finch Farm is rather unimpressive when you acquire it. There’s a water pump, cooking station, small cottage for a family of four, and a small plot of land with crops already in place. You’d be forgiven for slapping a few farmers and defenses in place and moving on, but there’s untapped potential here.

12 Starlight Drive-In

This former drive-in movie theater is now an empty parking lot with several rusting cars and barrels of radioactive waste. Those cars and the radioactive barrels can be scrapped for valuable resources to give you a large flat surface upon which you can build the base of your dreams.

11 Egret Tours Marina

Egret Tours Marina may seem like a terrible place for a base given the run down buildings and random encounter spawn point (the latter meaning this place will be under attack often). But it’s valuable for both you as the player and your empire with the right setup.

10 Covenant

This tiny town is a great settlement for the player almost as soon as it’s obtained. There are walls surrounding the entire settlement, lots of inhabitants, and a robot named Deezer who, on a daily basis, provides a can of Deezer’s Lemonade that heals 50 hit points.

8 Sanctuary Hills

The former home of the Sole Survivor prior to the nuclear holocaust can once again be their home as they embark on a quest to find their kidnapped son. While it will never live up to its former glory, players can rebuild Sanctuary Hills into a makeshift post-apocalyptic suburb straight out of the Rick And Morty episode "Rickmancing The Stone."

Castle Walls

Let's start simple, as lots of people have spent lots of time simply trying to turn back the nuclear clocks by recreating what once stood. The most obvious (and popular) candidate is the Castle, once known as Fort Independence.

The Castle Complex

And here's what happens when you fill in the rest of the Castle. Jakenburch has made a fortress of the fort, reinstating the artillery, setting up enough turrets to cut through a Raider army and making the whole place self-sufficient.

Spectacle Island Pier

Spectacle Island comes with the game's largest building area and, apparently, its highest built limit, meaning it's one of the most versatile locations going. Exonar has gone outwards instead of upwards, building a seaside shanty town complete with a nostalgic, no doubt toxic, high-rad pier.

Jamaica Plain Market

Sometimes, you just want a bit of Old World charm, which is why _atsu turned Jamaica Plain into a lovely little urban town centre, hustling and bustling like you'd hope for. It's a properly planned town, rather than a loose collection of shacks huddled around a big phallic symbol made of light panels like everyone else makes.

Red Rocket Bar and Grill

Some of my favourite builds are where players have just committed to an idea, rather than trying to make as much as possible. Where I saw a floating impossi-town, Time_for_Stories saw a homely restaurant, and made a genuinely inviting place of the early game gas station.

Power Armour Hanger

Another in the series I like to call, People Who Had My Idea But Way Better, Thanatos- also saw the Red Rocket roof as the perfect place to store power armour. Except I built a sort of pokey bunker, and they made an enormous, multi-level showroom with space for 58 separate suits.

Comic Book Store

RockKincaid went to the trouble of finding every single stat-boosting comic book in the game, and it's only right that they honour the rags of yesteryear with an appropriate resting place. In classic nerd fashion, the shop has every magazine stored by title, which I appreciate.

Preparation

This is truly one of the more daunting challenges that can be found in Fallout 4 's post-apocalyptic Bostonian wasteland. So before attempting to raise the maximum happiness of a settlement, first focus on leveling and collecting bottle caps, perhaps until the main quest is finished.

Meet the Needs of the People

When ready to start truly trying to raise the settlement to maximum happiness, be sure to build a clothes store and a trading store, in addition to as many clinics and restaurants as possible.

Things to Consider

While the reviews for Fallout 4 praise it as one of the best games of the year, there's no denying that the game definitely has its fair share of bugs.

Overview

Once built, these settlements can be customized extensively. Inside buildings and structures, furniture, decorations, and lights can be placed for aesthetic purposes; outside these structures, the player character can plant crops, create water and power supplies, and tend to the defensive needs of their new settlement.

Locations

There are 37 unlockable settlements total with 30 in the base game, one in Automatron, four in Far Harbor, one in Vault-Tec Workshop and one in Nuka-World. Most are obtained by completing an objective or killing hostiles/residents in the area then opening the workshop.

Overview

The Sole Survivor can acquire a variety of radiant quests from miscellaneous settlers. After joining the Minutemen, these quests are also obtained when talking to Preston Garvey or listening to Radio Freedom.

Necessities and dependencies

These stats need to be maintained to sustain or stagnate the growth of a settlement. Each necessity would also act as a dependency on other necessities; i.e. people need water, food, beds, and protection to live and thrive.

Settlement attacks

Once the Sole Survivor has control of a populated settlement, they will need to defend it from attacks by raiders, super mutants, and other hostiles. Impending attacks will be reported by the Sole Survivor's Pip-Boy, showing up as a miscellaneous objective.

Notes

Objects that are joined into the full structure can be moved as one object. In build mode, hold the select button ('e' for PC) on one element and the whole structure will be selected and moved as a whole.

Behind the scenes

During a game jam session at Bethesda, programmer Michael Dulany developed a system for building and furnishing player bases, which worked its way into Fallout 4 as the settlement workshop system. It was on the verge of being cut for a long amount of time during development, but remained in the game and became one of its tent-pole features.

15 . Repairable Sanctuary

This mod lets you use the workshop interface to repair Sanctuary's buildings, restore their roofs and outer walls as well as clean the interiors. The bridge can also be repaired. These repairs can be made without difficulty on an existing settlement because collisions account for the new structures.

14 . Spring Cleaning

There are a lot of unnecessary objects and items that you want to be removed in order to make your settlements look perfect but they can’t be scrapped. This mod will help you scrap those object and items. While it doesn’t do anything else much, it is a really useful mod if you’re a perfectionist.

13 . Settlement Supplies Expanded

This patch adds essential settlement goods such as functional furniture (beds, chairs, and benches), snappable doors, and a snappable chainlink fence set to the game.

12 . Wall Pass-Through Power Conduits

Have you ever been frustrated by the inability to drill a small hole through a wall to feed a power line through to a conduit on the other side? This mod solves the problem by introducing additional conduits and switches that snap onto the back of conventional conduits to transfer power from one side of a wall/roof to the other.

11 . Advanced Settlement Turrets

If your thing is settlement defense, then this mod will do just the work. It provides players with 27 new types of turrets for setting up their defenses properly. It contains different types of turrets including the Assaultron Laser turret, Blaster Turret, Cryolator turret, and even a Fat Man turret.

10 . Settlement Management Software

Ever felt overwhelmed managing your countless settlements? Well with Robco’s Settlement Management Software you can be at ease. This mod will give you all the power to efficiently manage your settlements. You can see the stats of your settlers, what they are assigned to or not, establish supply lines and many more.

9 . Conquest- Build New Settlements

With the help of the Conquest mod, you can build permanent or temporary settlements anywhere at any time. While on the road, set up a small campsite, cook, sleep, and recharge. Then pack your belongings and leave, or leave your mark by transforming your campsite into a thriving, fully-functional settlement.
