How did social media help the MeToo movement?
Before Alyssa Milano’s viral tweet, it was not common practice for women to speak out about their experiences with sexual harassment and abuse because the fear was that they would either lose their jobs or they would be shamed for it. However, the virality of the hashtag expanded the Overton Window and it became more acceptable and even encouraged for women to speak about their experiences. Social media also allowed the movement to grow to a large scale through the usage of networks . A study found that 45% percent of Facebook users had friends that posted about the MeToo movement. [66] Social media allowed the movement to have a large reach, and this allowed the movement to grow globally throughout a multitude of industries.
