Ports. Consider building near one of the trade ports on the edge of the board. Starting on a port is probably a bad idea because you'll want your initial settlements on the intersection of three resource tiles, not only two.

While a broken road makes your route shorter for purposes of the Longest Road card, you are not prohibited from building on either side of the break.

If you have a settlement on one of the two spots that touches a port, you have access to that port. If the port has a question mark with a 3:1 symbol, that means you can now trade in 3 of any one resource to get one of any resource you want.
Does the robber block ports?
No. From the almanac, p11: Players with settlements and/or cities adjacent to the target terrain hex receive no resources from this hex as long as the robber is in the hex. That's it; the robber rules say nothing about maritime trade and the maritime trade rules say nothing about the robber.

You can place your starting settlements pretty much anywhere you want. You just have to obey the distance rule and ensure you place your settlement at a hex intersection.
Do settlements interrupt longest road?
The settlement blocks your road if it appears at the end of your road, that is if one of your roads comes off it. If it is in the middle of your road, so that there are two of your roads coming off it, you can keep building at both ends, but the settlement splits the road in two when counting for longest road.
